Maïlis Roy

Maïlis is a half French, half Canadian Montreal-based director. She comes from a background in psychology and production design.

As a proud feminist, she is drawn to projects that empower women and provoke discussion. She always portrays her ideas in her own way. She firmly believes that as image makers, we are responsible for what we create and put into the world. Therefore, she hopes that her filmmaking practice will not only represent and amplify her voice as a woman but also others, thus nurturing a community.

To feed her artistry, she always navigates between strength and vulnerability. She is all about visual work that exudes emotions. She has created a body of work that pairs a strong visual aesthetic with an effecting, emotional approach. Through her direction, she aims to match what is real to what is beautiful.

What made you want to join Hidden Kingdom ?

I wanted to join Hidden Kingdom because I felt that we have the same vision on the social issues of the industry. I believe that our collaboration can lead me to reflect that in my work while feeling valid and in my place to do it. I also feel like they have a true openness over the stories I have to tell.
